Project - Electric ferry for Lake Zurich
Projectdetails
Emission-free electric ships for passenger transport
The zero-emission newbuilds will replace three diesel-powered vessels that had been operating for around 30 years on the Limmat, the river that runs out of Lake Zurich and crosses Switzerland's largest city, Zurich. "With the order from Switzerland, we have succeeded for the first time in asserting ourselves on the international market with our expertise in building electric solar-powered vessels for professional inland navigation," emphasizes Dr. Thomas Kühmstedt, Technical Director at Ostseestaal and Managing Director of the subsidiary Ampereship GmbH, which is responsible for building the Zurich vessels.
The three electric passenger ships, each 22.50 meters long and 3.80 meters wide, are the largest and at the same time most demanding shipbuilding order for Ostseestaal to date. The ship design poses a particular challenge. "Since the ships have to turn on the narrow Limmat River and operate under very deep bridges, a very flat hull is required," explains Ingo Schillinger, manager in charge at Ampereship. In addition, with room for 61 passengers each, the newbuildings are designed to be more spacious and quieter than their predecessors. Air-conditioned all year round and wheelchair accessible, the new ZSG ships will in future be used not only for local passenger transport but also for events and functions on the water.
The ships will be equipped with fully electric propulsion. This is designed in such a way that the high-performance batteries are recharged overnight on land with green electricity from the Zurich Electricity Works. Additional "green power" for the three Limmat ships will be supplied by a photovoltaic system on the ZSG company premises.
The company Ostseestaal has successfully developed the business area of electric solar ships in recent years and has so far manufactured ten of these special ships for various applications.
