Deckhouse for double-ended ferry

Projektdetails

Ostseestaal supplies aluminium deckhouse for North Sea double-ended ferry
Know-how from Stralsund in demand in international shipbuilding

Stralsund, January 2021 - On Friday, 29 January 2021, the shell of a 14-tonne deckhouse was shipped from Ostseestaal GmbH & Co KG in Frankenhafen, Stralsund. The deckhouse, made entirely of aluminium, was loaded onto the multi-purpose ship "Maureen S" with the help of two cranes. The ship section is being delivered to the Pella Sietas shipyard in Hamburg, where a double-ended ferry is currently being built on behalf of AG Reederei Norden-Frisia. The 74.3-metre-long and 13.4-metre-wide passenger and car ferry will in future shuttle between Norddeich on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony and the island of Norderney. The ship will be equipped with a diesel-electric hybrid drive and will reach a cruising speed of 12 knots (22.2 km/h). In addition, Ostseestaal is supplying other construction components such as funnels and supply and exhaust sections, which are also made of aluminium and thus contribute to a more energy-efficient weight reduction of the ferry.

With the production of the deckhouse for a double-ended ferry, Ostseestaal is once again demonstrating its expertise in the manufacture of special structures for international shipbuilding," emphasises Michael Schultze, Business Unit Manager at Ostseestaal. "Especially the welding of aluminium and other high-quality materials requires very specialised know-how and many years of experience." Traditionally, Ostseestaal supplies the shipyard industry with three-dimensionally cold-formed steel sheets. Ostseestaal has long been the technology leader in 3D cold forming. The process makes it possible to meet very individual and special customer requirements. With the growing trend towards the construction of special ships in international shipbuilding, Ostseestaal has been able to further consolidate its leading position in this market.

For several years now, the Stralsund-based specialist company has also been active as a shipbuilder itself. So far, ten electric solar ships have been built for various applications in professional inland navigation. Two new electric solar ferries are currently in production. Through a high diversity in the product range, Ostseestaal also continuously secures orders in aircraft construction, the wind energy sector and tank industry as well as for architectural projects. Recently, the company has also started designing and manufacturing shell flaps for mega yachts.
